Faculty and students in the College of Veterinary Medicine impact the lives of animals and people every day through our education, research, service, and outreach programs.

These include everything from caring for pets to managing, treating, and preventing animal diseases that affect Minnesota’s agriculture economy.

The College of Veterinary Medicine is also home to the Veterinary Medical Center, a state-of-the-art teaching hospital and the most advanced veterinary care facility in the state.

Here, we treat animals large and small. We are known for our superb quality of care and innovation in animal treatments.

Through forward-thinking programs and partnerships, the College of Veterinary Medicine is changing the landscape of how veterinary medicine is taught and delivered:

  • In partnership with Davis Family Dairies, we opened a state-of-the-art education center for dairy medicine in New Sweden, Minn. This working dairy was built to incorporate education—giving students a real-life, hands-on learning experience.
  • Our Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a partnership with the Minnesota Board of Health, is the state’s only full-service, accredited diagnostic facility for animal health and disease. It detects and monitors animal disease, develops new diagnostic methods, and trains veterinarians in treating these diseases.

The College of Veterinary Medicine is focused on its commitment to sustain Minnesota’s strong agriculture industry. We’ve launched several initiatives to help stem the steep decline in students who embark on careers in caring for farm animals.

These include Veterinary Food Animal Scholars Track (VetFAST)—a program that fast-tracks students in food-animal medicine in order to fill much-needed positions in rural areas, food industry, and state and federal agencies. Our close proximity to the Medical School, the College of Biological Sciences, and the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences ensures a collaborative research environment for faculty and students. Areas of strength include:
