“Our clinic is about the philosophy of health care,” said Carolyn Torkelson, M.D., medical director of integrative care at University of Minnesota Physicians. “It’s about wellness, healing, and being self-empowered to take care of yourself - body, mind, and spirit;  we are providing an opportunity for that to happen.”

“It’s really part of a consumer-driven, national paradigm shift to more preventive and integrative care” said Diana Drake, WHNP, program director of Women's Integrative Health(WHSC) and faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. “If you want to broaden your health care options, we’re providing those options here.”

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (January 17 , 2011) – Last week, University of Minnesota Physicians opened the doors to its newly-renovated Women’s Health Specialists Clinic, offering a new model of health care that focuses on a comprehensive array of treatment options for women.

The clinic is designed as a “one stop shop” for women looking for a singular location for many of their health care needs and combines services previously located across the U of M campus.

Now located in the Riverside Professional Building alongside the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, on the University’s West Bank, the clinic provides health care throughout a woman’s lifespan. Women have access to obstetrical care, gynecological specialists as well as primary care in one location. In addition, integrative services including acupuncture, nutritional counseling, and health coaches are also available.

The Women’s Health Specialists Clinic’s diverse staff includes OB/GYN, midwives, primary care physicians, advanced practice nurses, psychological services, and pharmacy consults. While these clinical offerings have been available across the U of M campus as a component of other clinics, offering women all options in one location is convenient, efficient, and patient-centered. The multidisciplinary and integrated approach is unique, but the dynamic is part of a growing trend.
