Research Focus
Periodontal (gum) disease is the main focus of researcher Bryan Michalowicz, who investigates the role of oral health on general health and wellness. Michalowicz and colleagues have studied the effects of treating gum disease during pregnancy on preterm birth. Currently, he, physician Elizabeth Seaquist and others are studying whether periodontal treatment improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes and periodontitis. More recently, Michalowicz teamed with rheumatologist Jerry Molitor to determine if periodontal bacteria are environmental triggers for rheumatoid arthritis.
