About HSEC

Today’s new models of health care require different professions to work together in close collaboration, using new strategies and new technologies. Preparing for that world requires new ways of teaching and learning for our students.

The Health Sciences Education Center is designed to transform health education in Minnesota by moving from the lecture hall to active, team-based learning in the same type of small-group environments that students will encounter as practicing healthcare professionals.

As the hub for all the health professional schools, HSEC’s spaces will promote interprofessional education and interaction as well as foster a culture that values student and faculty well-being.

Innovation and Learning Support

The Biomedical Library and the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine to support the knowledge lifecycle through emerging technologies, staff with deep expertise, and a world-renowned collection of rare books and manuscripts to spark innovation and transform learning through knowledge discovery, use, creation, and sharing. Features include virtual and augmented reality, data visualization, 1:Button video recording studios, a makerspace with tools to support problem-based learning, and a Faculty Commons to facilitate technology integration into the learning environment.

Simulation and Immersive Training

Centralized enhanced simulation and immersive training environments where Interprofessional teams can train in sophisticated, real-world settings, including both acute and ambulatory care spaces. Other spaces include trainer stations, briefing/ debriefing rooms, and actor prep areas.

Other areas include student services, a recruitment and visitor center, and a café.
